Qualifying for Weight Loss Surgery

To qualify for weight loss surgery, the National Institute of Health has set minimum requirements for patients:

  • 100 pounds or more above ideal body weight or a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or greater, or
  • BMI of 35 or greater with one or more obesity-related health conditions.

Other qualifying factors may include:

  • A history of attempted weight loss
  • Psychological evaluation
  • A lifelong commitment to a set of guidelines regarding diet, exercise, and follow up care

Many physicians conduct several medical tests to ensure that weight loss surgery is a viable option for you. Qualifying can be a long and arduous process. Consult your physician to see if you qualify for surgery.
